About Norris Lake, Tennessee
Norris Lake, also called Norris Reservoir, is a man‑made lake in East Tennessee created when Norris Dam was built on the Clinch River in the 1930s. It was the first big project of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), designed to help control flooding, store water, and generate clean hydroelectric power.
The lake stretches for well over 100 miles along the Clinch and Powell Rivers, with hundreds of miles of winding shoreline, deep clear coves, and mountain views. Water levels rise and fall through the seasons, but the lake stays a favorite spot for boating, fishing, and lakeside cabins.
Parks and protected areas like Norris Dam State Park help keep large stretches of shoreline natural while giving visitors miles of trails and plenty of room to play on the water. Around the lake you’ll find classic Appalachian oak‑pine forests, with a mix of hardwoods in the hollows.
