On Thursday afternoon, Norris Dam opened up its spill gates and created a man-made waterfall. Many people stopped to watch the water pour down from Norris Lake. The lake is about five feet higher than where it should be for this time of year. During this spill, some of TVA’s hydroelectric equipment was out for maintenance.
The spill gates have not been opened since 2011.
The dam is spilling at a rate of 15,000 gallons of water per second.
